Simple calculation methods for the lighting of passages and tunnels

Abstract

For passages, the average luminance is a suitable design quantity and can be very easily calculated by equations given in the article. For tunnels, the same principle can be combined with the sector flux concept to calculate the illuminance at any point, or by a simple summation of angle fluxes to obtain the average illuminance on the road. This combination of relatively recent ideas yields a sound and rapid design method.
