BS 4533 has replaced BS 3820 as the British Standard for most types of luminaire. The new standard takes account of the relevant international standards and is in two Parts. General requirements and tests are specified in Part 1, and those requirements applicable to a particular group of luminaires are given in the relevant section of Part 2. The paper describes the tests applicable to a general purpose luminaire, and discusses the steps that should be taken by the designer to ensure compliance with the requirements.
