Abstract
The CIE method for measuring and specifying colour rendering properties of light sources is discussed in relation to the meaning which could be attached to colour rendering tolerances. It is shown that in practice the just noticeable colour rendering difference may have an appreciable uncertainty due to the method itself, as well as due to variations between observers. The experimental techniques required for estimating a just noticeable colour rendering difference are discussed, and a theoretical model for interpretation and analysis of results is set up.
