A number of studies have suggested that the majority of slopes in temperate latitudes have changed little during the Holocene. However, this is largely an untested assumption. This paper examines the rationale for such an assumption and finds it lacking in many respects. Much will depend on the intensity and effectiveness of landscape-forming processes and the sensitivity of the landscape to change. Using a number of specific examples it is suggested that Holocene slope activity has been more significant and widespread than previously thought.
