Abstract
This paper reports recent trends in active vibration control mainly as developed in Japan for civil structures. Firstly, it classifies vibration control methods and controllers, especially active dynamic absorbers that are widely used in mechanical and civil engineering. Secondly, it addresses basic problems in the control of vibration of flexible structures such as formulating the reduced-order model required for designing vibration controllers, the correct arranging of sensors and actuators, and how to prevent spillover instability. Finally, the practical use of control theories such as linear-quadratic control theory,
