Abstract
The message from the European Commission concerning energy and the environment is that energy efficiency is the principal weapon in the armoury for the fight against environmental pollution and the perceived 'greenhouse effect'. The portfolio of support programmes administered by the Commission and associated bodies, which can direct well over 1,000 MECU into industry and research organisations, offers many opportunities for progress in pollution control, linked to upstream energy efficiency, 'clean' technologies or downstream control equipment. In this paper some of the opportunities afforded by these programmes are discussed, and their operation illustrated, where appropriate, by 'case studies' of technology for combustion emission control. The paper concludes with advice for potential participants in the technology programmes of the European Commission.
