It is almost impossible to grasp why a tale about a Mormon missionary to Britain and an American beauty queen who (allegedly) kidnapped him should have captured the imagination of Fleet Street. But Peter Tory, a Daily Express journalist who was assigned to the story, does his best. As he writes: "The tale, as lurid as it was hilarious, was beyond fiction, beyond parody. No scriptwriter could have invented the plot. No editor could have exaggerated the detail.
