Abstract
Daily Mai columnist McKay believes that "those who can, do, and those who can't edit"! Here he recalls editors he has known and writes: "In my experience there are two distinct types of editor - Alpha and Beta, if you like. Alphas are hard-driving individuals who are at their papers for 12 hours a day and do not generally accept invitations to appear on TV or waffle on the radio. Betas lunch out regularly and often view editorship as a mean of widening their acquaintanceship and raising their public profile... they lead with a light hand on the tiller, taking themselves off to restaurants or gentlemen's clubs at around 1pm, coming back after three and going home long before the presses roll."
