Abstract
Academic Gall laments the virtual disappearance of industrial or labour correspondents - reduced now to "strike reporters" - and writes: "Firstly, journalists who are trade unionists could be expected to try to obtain greater and better coverage for issues germane to fellow trades unionists in general - issues of work and employment. Second, as, generally speaking, enlightened, educated and intelligent people, journalists could be expected to try to obtain greater or better coverage for issues which affect seven million people - the aggregate size of union membership... Third, journalists could be expected to try to obtain greater or better coverage for issues that affect 25 million people, the current size of the workforce... For many, work is the central part of people's lives."
