Disability: lessons to be learnt

Abstract

The writer, who has slight learning difficulties, demands better representation of people like himself throughout the media and writes: "People with a learning disability are excluded from many parts of the media. I don't see people with a learning disability reading the news. I don't see people with a learning disability on soaps or games shows. When I do see people with a learning disability, it is often as negative stereotypes, such as mongols or the mentally handicapped. I would like to see people with a learning disability in a positive light. I would to see people with a learning disability represented in the same way as everybody else."
