Abstract
Media commentator Mayes expresses concern over the amount of opinion now being injected into newspaper and television news reporting. "What appears to be a harmless new style to 'engage' people has altered journalistic standards - and not for the better," she writes. "Worse, perhaps, is the possibility of this variation in news values may have contributed to the erosion of trust between the news media and the public. After all why should the public rely on news reporters if they're seen only to be offering yet another opinion? The cliché used to be, 'You can't believe everything you read in the newspapers or see on TV.' Now it's in danger of becoming: 'You can't believe anything.'"
