Abstract
The Professor of Media History at the University of Westminster considers the past history of rows between governments and the media - not just the BBC - and what has followed from them. Her conclusion is that "It remains essential that the [BBC] governors have to be seen to govern, the processes of governance tightened and made more explicit. But it is important to realise that outcomes are the result of politics, not justice. Yes, rows between the media and governments have consequences. They have only occasionally been fatal."
