Abstract
The changing face of TV news and the plethora of different bulletins across terrestrial and satellite stations and the internet is not necessarily good news for the viewer, writes Chris Shaw, senior Programme Controller at Channel Five. "In today's multi-channel universe there is a positive glut of television news from which to choose," he writes. "Leaving aside the three domestic 24-hour news services, there's 110 hours of the stuff on terrestrial TV each week. In 1994 that figure was 60 hours and back in 1985 just 22. News is everywhere. So why are people watching less TV news when it has never been more available?"
