Abstract
Katchi abads: living on the edge describes sorne recent evictions in Karachi and why they took place despite an official policy which seeks to regularze (legalize) and upgrade sq ater settlements (katchi abadis). The paper also describes the consequences of eviction for poor families and what is needed to orestall a growing number of violent evictions.
