Abstract
In the light of the decision to close IFLA's Universal Bibliographic Control and International MARC (UBCIM) programme. Die Deutsche Bibliothek conducted a survey of national libraries which showed an ongoing need for a programme of activity in the field of bibliographic control. The paper describes the creation of the new IFLA-CDNL Alliance for Bibliographic Standards (ICABS) which aims to ensure coordination of, and support for, key activities in this area. It defines the Alliance's main goals and describes the responsibilities of the project's partner institutions. The importance of avoiding duplication with the work of other agencies is noted, and the mechanism for achieving this is outlined, together with the arrangements for the governance of the Alliance.
