Abstract
In 1997, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) established its Committee on Free Access to Information and Freedom of Expression (FAIFE). The initiative's aims were to promote freedom of information and expression and their importance to libraries and to respond to attacks and limitations on libraries and librarians. This paper summarizes the early history of the programme and offers a personal assessment of its success from the perspective of the author who was the Committee's inaugural Chair.
