Integrated modification of silicon carbide ceramic armor via kaolin and Soda-lime glass for enhanced ballistic protection: Fabrication,characterization,and performance analysis

Abstract

This work proposed the introduction of a new approach to modify plate ceramics for armor. Two additives were used, kaolin and soda-lime glass, which were added to silicon carbide in variable weight ratios: 5, 10, and 15 wt.% for the kaolin, while the glass was added at 5, 15, and 30 wt.%. The samples were formed using axial pressing and then sintered at 1100 °C. It was found that increasing the percentage of clay and glass leads to a decrease in porosity, an increase in density, and a decrease in the water absorption of samples. The mechanical properties (hardness and diametrical compression) increased with the increase in the proportion of kaolin, and the thermal conductivity also increased. Also, a scanning electron microscope was used. Finally, the specimen was examined by a ballistic test, and it successfully provided safety for people against bullets who were shot by rifle AK-47. This article contributed to the provision of high-efficiency and low-cost bulletproof shields from available cheap materials (kaolin, glass, and silicon carbide).
