Breakthroughs in high thermal applications: Implication of chlorinated polyvinyl chloride with N-methyl-2 pyrrolidone

Abstract

This study focuses on applying the blending of chlorinated polyvinyl chloride and N- methyl-2 pyrrolidone to the absorbent layer to improve the solar still’s performance and as a result, the distillate production per hour. Composition properties, such as physical (viscosity), chemical (solubility), mechanical (surface tension), electrical (dielectric constant), and morphological (FT-IR, UV-visible, SEM, and FTRaman) were characterized for the prepared samples. Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride of different weight percentages was blended into N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone to study their various properties. In accordance with the dielectric experiments, NMP with various concentrations of CPVC enhances the material’s electrical characteristics. The NMP with a 20% CPVC sample had the highest dielectric constant. The solubility test reveals the CPVC with NMP was supposed to be moderately soluble after 3 min of heating at 60°C. Based on thermal gravimetry analysis (TGA) findings, heat transfer is extroverted because there is less space between the particles. For sample C (NMP with 18% of CPVC), the dielectric strength and thermal conductivity were observed to be 35.1 and 0.162 W/m.K, which shows the importance of the blending of CPVC with NMP. For sample C, the surface tension and thermal conductivity were observed to be 0.0367 N/m and 0.162 W/m.K. Thus, the study’s findings provided intriguing possibilities to assess CPVC and NMP in solar stills.
