The current conflict over the Israeli-occupied territories is intimately related to the character of Israel as a state formation. How are we to understand and conceptualize this relationship? The author discusses the significance of the occupation for alternative interpretations of Israeli state-building patterns. He concludes that these patterns are best explained if studied within the `frontier perspective'.
