This paper analyses the nature of research and development activities in small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) in the Istanbul metropolis, where many of the leading-edge industrial companies in the Turkish economy are located. The results of a survey of activities are presented and discussed. In this context, the possible roles of Turkish universities in promoting scientific awareness among SMEs are assessed.
