Abstract
Continuing professional development (CPD) has a central role to play in helping engineers and their employers to respond positively to technical and commercial change. Many recent reports have highlighted the importance of CPD and the need for action to ensure its widespread implementation. Against this background, the author analyses the strategies through which this can be achieved – these strategies should include the promotion of CPD, increased demands by individuals through structured management of their CPD, and joint understanding and action by all the partners. Furthermore, commitment and motivation require an agreed framework of standards and credible approaches to measurement and recognition.
