Abstract
Industrial training is experiencing great change, innovation and turbulence. As firms ‘re-engineer’ their organizations, training is coming under management scrutiny more than ever before. Those in the training business are often surprised by rapidly shifting needs, technology changes, demographic changes in the training business, and changes in business and organizational priorities. In this article, the author presents his views on the state of industrial training today. He criticizes a number of training practices as inefficient, and suggests that these are the practices on which we should concentrate as we improve the business of training. He makes predictions for the future of training technology and offers suggestions to industry, training firms, information providers and educational institutions. His purpose here is to focus the attention of management on key decisions which must be taken now if training is to be brought up to an acceptable level of efficiency and preparedness.
