Abstract
In recent years China has achieved rapid economic growth. This is in part due to the ‘opening up’ of the country to the outside world through reforms of the economic system. Technology transfer and innovation have played a significant role in that growth and are a high priority in the government's agenda for future development. This article reviews recent developments in technology transfer in China and looks at the policies in place and under development to encourage more widespread technology innovation, transfer and dissemination. In particular, the author considers the role of foreign investment, the establishment of Special Economic and Technical Development Areas, and further economic and financial infrastructure reforms.
