Abstract
The diversity of the tourism industry makes it difficult for those educators trying to develop tourism education to meet the needs of the industry as a whole. Since there is no real agreement between government, industry and academics in most countries as to what actually constitutes the tourism industry, the requirements to identify accurately the needs of an undefined sector and to design training and education to meet those needs are problematic. At the same time, there has been a resistance on the part of the industry to formal qualifications in travel and tourism, partly as a result of the youth of the subject area. Consequently, the development of an harmonious and mutually beneficial education-industry interface has been inhibited and this raises many issues for travel and tourism educators in the 1990s.
