The authors stress the increasing importance of mathematics to industry and present three brief case studies of the application of mathematical solutions to significant industrial problems. In the context of this evidence that mathematics can play a valuable role in tackling technical and economic problems in industry, the authors suggest ways to facilitate the transfer of mathematical skills to industry and point up consequences for the education of industrial mathematicians.
