This article describes the revolutionary approach to industrial training programmes that is taken by the US union of United Automobile Workers. It is innovative because of the type, size and scope of the courses offered, and also because the programmes are operated jointly by both management and union representatives. The concept of jointness has the potential to transform industrial relations.
