Abstract
In April 1989 the UK Council for Industry and Higher Education launched the Partnership Awards. This is a system of annual prizes for innovation in teaching and learning in higher education. Each prize is sponsored by a major firm or organization, and relates to a topic or aspect in which the sponsor has a direct or indirect interest. The author of the proposal gives an entirely personal interpretation of the background to the scheme, and reports the progress so far.
