Abstract
This article describes the successful transfer of technology, arising from a fundamental study of the removal of a layer of oil floating on water, from the University of Manchester into a small/medium-sized enterprise and its subsequent development into a range of marine and industrial oil skimmers addressing a worldwide market. In the context of the constraint of development activities within an academic base, it discusses the importance of ongoing licence management in the maintenance of market lead of the product.
