Abstract
Project management skills have become an increasingly essential and enduring feature of most university research. As UK universities have now become big business, this article questions whether these complex management tasks can safely be left in the hands of existing university mechanisms alone. Under discussion is the current framework for the funding of UK universities. The author expresses the view that government must set up a better framework and must cease expecting universities to subsidize commissioned research.
