Abstract
This article describes two distance learning modular programmes of study, one on industrial applications of computers and the other on manufacturing processes, systems and operations, developed by the Open University in conjunction with the SERC to update practising engineers and managers in industry. It looks at one particular course in detail, and attempts to show how the Open University is playing its part in helping UK industry sharpen its competitive edge.
