Abstract
The current economic climate encourages cooperation between public and industrial research establishments. This paper examines such cooperation from the viewpoint of Elf Aquitaine, the French oil company. The author reviews the historical background to cooperation of this nature, highlights the rewards and pitfalls, addresses the question of funding and forecasts future trends.
