Abstract
The results from research in learning and reading disabilities generally fail to confirm a consistent relationship between reading performance and visual perception, auditory perception, or modality preference. Clinical observations and teachers' opinions do, however, suggest the presence of such a relationship. This article reviews the research and suggests factors including the presence of Type III error, defined as asking the wrong research questions, that may explain the discrepancies among research studies, and between research results and clinical experience.
