Flurbiprofen-induced upper respiratory and ocular adverse effects in a patient having non-cardiac chest pain

Abstract

Background

Flurbiprofen (FLU) is a phenylalkanoic acid derivative which is one of the most commonly used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

Case presentation

A 27-year-old woman with no known previous diseases presented with chest pain, rhinorrhoea, dry cough, increased lacrimation and symptoms of laryngeal irritation (throat clearing, hoarseness, mild sore throat). She was taking FLU 100 mg tablet (tb) orally, and these complaints began 30 min following drug ingestion. The cardiopulmonary examination and electrocardiogram (ECG) were normal.

Results

We determined that a potentially fatal and very rare combination of allergic reactions from FLU use in association with symptom of laryngeal irritation, acute diffuse pharyngitis and increased lacrimation were possibly responsible for her symptoms.

Conclusions

These symptoms terminated by intravenous (IV) Pheniramine maleate and Prednisolone within 2 hours of their onset. The patient was recommended to refrain from using FLU permanently.
