Abstract

The Executive and International Boards of the Netherlands Quarterly of Human Rights are deeply saddened by the sudden and untimely passing of Professor Christof Heyns at the end of March 2021. Professor Heyns of the University of Pretoria in South Africa was known around the world for his tireless dedication to the advancement of human rights. For many years, he has been a tremendously valued member of the International Board of the NQHR. His expertise voiced through countless reviews of articles submitted to the NQHR have been an incredible help to authors, as well as to ourselves. We remain indebted and grateful for his work and commitment to our journal. Board members remember him as ‘a great human being’ and a very dear friend of many. Above all, he was ‘a courageous human rights defender, brilliant teacher and academic’ who ‘fought for human rights with an academic pen’ and ‘taught and inspired generations of students’.
We offer our condolences and deepest respect to his family, friends and colleagues around the world. May his commitment, drive and knowledge live on among his many students and fellow academics.
