This article discusses the challenges faced when studying a small social movement composed of intellectual and academic activists purporting to represent the marginalized group of Middle Eastern and North African Jews in Israel. It presents the methodological problems faced when studying academic activists who also produce much of the academic literature on the group they represent and considers the ethical dilemmas related to studying supposed elites in a conflict context.
