Abstract
Although labor unions have been among the most important categories of voluntary organizations in American society, little has been written about them in the nonprofits literature. This article examines the relationship between foundations and labor unions. That relationship has involved both approach and avoidance. Tied as they have been to corporate leaders, foundations often have opposed radicalism in the labor movement. However, foundations also have supported the union movement in a variety of ways. Particularly important is their support for research, education, and community reconstruction in the wake of plant closings.
