Abstract
Church involvement in urban community renewal is both widespread and underrecognized. Community development corporations (CDCs), the basic institutional unit involved in urban community renewal, have grown tenfold in number since their creation in the 1960s. Today, many churches are forming CDCs to improve the lives of congregants and residents in the community. This article examines eight “church birthed” CDCs that are actively engaged in the development of housing for low-and moderate-income individuals and families in Los Angeles County, California.
