Boards of directors of human service agencies are rarely representative of the com
munities they serve. This paper examines the characteristics, recruitment, retention,
and participation of minority members of boards. Minority representation and the
stresses unique to minority participants are also discussed. Some practical steps
toward achieving diversity and some directions for future research are suggested.
