Abstract
People empowerment has been linked to the processes of social development in developing societies as well as to more technologically advanced societies. This article explores how self-help and mutual-aid concepts are exemplified by the existence of an expanding self-help movement. The activities of self-help organiza tions can create appropriate conditions for the actualization of people empower ment Thus they have important consequences for the realization of developmental objectives, i.e., on an individual, group, institutional and community level.
