Abstract
Humor is a complex phenomenon A holistic approach to humor that integrates biophysical, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual dimensions takes into consideration the complexity of humor. A lively sense of humor is dependent on well–functioning dimensions of self. Defective development of any or all of the dimensions of self undermine one's sense of humor. Humor contributes to the promotion and maintenance of wellness and it also offers promise as a noninvasive yet effective strategy for the treatment ofillness. In order to use humor therapeutically, client coping patterns, anxiety level, and sense of humor need to be thoroughly assessed. The use of humor can be a truly holistic nursing intervention.
