Abstract
This paper presents a portion of a study which addressed the problem: What factors are involved when an individual makes a change in the health pattern of exercise? Due to the preliminary nature of this study, data was obtained using the qualitative method of phenomenology from eight (four males and four females) volunteer participants who had changed their exercise pattern from no, or inconsistent exercise, to consistent exercise. The interviews were tape recorded, transcribed, and analyzed by Colaizzi's method. Conclusions from the data analysis included differences between the two groups: (a) males emphasized physical benefits of exercise, whereas females stressed mental benefits, (b) males mentioned goals, whereas females stressed enjoyment, and (c) a common finding — group support was important. The paper concludes with suggestions for the holistic nurse in facilitating health pattern change.
