This paper analyzes the initial success and ultimate failure of a challenge to the economically and politically dominant class in a small town in the U.S. Midwest. The case study is used to elucidate the workings of what Lukes has called the third dimension of power, the ability of the powerful to engineer the consent of the relatively less powerful.
