Abstract
The Western hemisphere is experiencing a multidimensional system of US domination sustained through asymmetrical alliances of the economic, political, and military kind. That system of domination has fallen into crisis and is being challenged by a multifaceted resistance of popular, democratic, reformist, and revolutionary forces. Attempts to preserve the hegemonic ‘Pan-American Order’ gave rise to a ‘surge’ that is analyzed in this article. This hegemonic design has been confronted with new and alternative kinds of regional integration initiatives, spearheaded by the revolutionary states and to some extent assimilated by reformist governments. In this dynamic context, a futurist analysis of the region’s short-term prospects suggests that the challenge of building unity around revolutionary and reform processes represents the best hope for cracking US hegemony over the Americas.
