Abstract
Diuresis, urinary Na and K excretion, peritoneal removal of water, Na and K were evaluated in 12 patients on CAPD before and after treatment with furosemide (500 mg/day) or muzolimine (480 mg/day). There was a significant increase in urine volume, and urinary Na and K excretion in the patients with at least 100 ml/24 hour urine volume. Neither diuretic affected the peritoneal dialy sate emuent volume. Our study shows that chronic administration of “loop” diuretics in high doses is useful in preventing weight gain due to water retention in patients undergoing CAPD.
