Abstract
As part of a comprehensive continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) program, the Ochsner Foundation Home Training Unit, in association with the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, has established a preventive approach to spinal musculoskeletal problems. Because the CAPD patient is susceptible to back complaints resulting from alterations in body posture and altered bone metabolism, we have designed a special program for evaluation and prevention, which incorporates special exercises for posture correction and energy conservation. Sixteen of 32 patients have been evaluated, instructed and supervised in this program. Two patients required back supports in addition to exercises. One patient was withdrawn from CAPD because of incapacitating back pain. The remaining 15 have been able to sustain normal activity and avoid back pain with exercises alone.
