The National Information Infrastructure (NII) is having a great impact on communities and culture, although in ways not well understood. Increasing isolation of individuals, changing conceptions of privacy, and a breakdown in face-to-face relationships are but a few of the far-reaching social consequences of the NII. The massive federal investment in the NII requires a proportional effort to understand its human aspects and consequences.
