Abstract
This concise introduction has seven orientation chapters (e.g., selecting variables, transforming data) followed by seven procedures chapters (descriptives, crosstabs, correlation, multiple regression, t-tests, i-way ANOVA, 2-way ANOVA), and a final chapter on a data project that runs throughout the text. Written by two psychologists and a sociologist, the accompanying data set focuses on sex roles, leadership styles, and leadership effectiveness in the "E-Z Corporation." Appendixes deal with survey and scale construction for classes where students collect their own data. The brevity of treatment can be a disservice to students, as in the oversimplified discussion of the assumptions of regression or in limiting discussion of association to brief use of Kendall's tau. For a course using a statistics text for statistics, however, Computer-Based Data Analysis is an excellent supplement that minimizes jargon and focuses students on the essentials of getting relevant output from the SPss package. Note there is no coverage whatsoever of SPSS/PC +, and students using the Pc version would probably be thrown off track by the differences.
