Abstract
Mind Over Machine is a critique of claims made by advocates of some artificial intelligence (AI). The authors present a theory of leaming that suggests limitations in the potential of AI. They describe the ramifications of their position for expert systems development, the utilization of computers in education, and the application of management science techniques. The reader is introduced to age-old philosophical debates and to recent research findings concerning human percep tion, learning, and decision making. The authors' chronicle of developments in AI and expert systems emphasizes difficulties encountered and supports the contention that such systems usually produce decisions inferior to those of experienced human experts.
