Abstract
This column explores the issue of mistakes in research, from the mismatch of theoretical framework and design to methodological errors. Rather than a discussion of such issues from the usual mistake as problem perspective, the author has chosen to present a view of mistake as golden opportunity for reflection and collegial sharing of ideas generated by the research as an integral part of the learning process. Following a brief discussion of normal science versus revolutionary thinking, and of the views of philosophers Kuhn, Popper, and Feyerabend, the author makes an appeal for tolerance, closing with ideas for advancing nursing science on purpose.
