In this article. I suggest that McPhee (1988) identified a particular level of analysis—chains—that is compatible, not incompatible, with the approach of Dansereau, Alutto, and Yammarino (1984). Moreover, whereas McPhee focuses on vertical communication chains, Dansereau and Markham (1987) focus on the links in such chains. The article concludes by suggesting the appropriateness of focusing on chains (McPhee, 1988), as well as the links in such chains (Dansereau et al., 1984).
